A screw pile is fully load-bearing the moment it goes in. No curing, no forms, and no spoil to truck away. Most piles take 10 to 30 minutes depending on soil conditions and depth, so the next trade starts the same day.

Concrete needs a weather window. Screw piles largely don't — which matters on a build season that keeps getting interrupted. Where the foundation sits on the critical path, that difference is usually measured in weeks, not days.

Compact hydraulic equipment means restricted access isn't a problem: infill lots, live facilities, and positions tight against existing structures where a larger machine can't get in.

Orbis Engineering contracted Inland directly to engineer, fabricate and install 709 screw piles for the Hut 8 facility in Medicine Hat — 40 modular data centre units, transformers, a pipe rack and a communications tower, plus full cutting and capping. It finished two months ahead of schedule, building on earlier work at the adjacent Unit 16 Power Plant.

Our manufacturing facility is in Coaldale, roughly two hours south of Calgary. Everything is engineered, fabricated and quality-controlled in that one building before it leaves — over 10 acres of lay-down area and more than 15,000 sq ft of interior fabrication space, enough to process over 180,000 lbs of piling material in a single eight-hour shift. Large pile counts don't have to be staged over months.

Installation torque is measured continuously as each pile goes in, and torque correlates directly to bearing capacity. You get real-time confirmation on site that the engineered requirement has been met, plus a documented record for the structural engineer. Yes. Screw piles are installed with compact hydraulic equipment, so restricted-access work is normal rather than exceptional — infill lots, live facilities that can't shut down, and positions close to existing structures where larger machinery can't reach. Installation is low-vibration, and there's no excavation spoil to store or haul away, which matters when there's nowhere on site to put it.

The True Pitch™ bevelled leading edge cuts cleanly through frozen and dense ground rather than augering through it, so installation carries on in conditions that shut a concrete pour down. There's no curing window to protect and no temperature threshold to wait for, which is how a foundation stays off the critical path through an Alberta winter.

Ground varies site to site, which is why we don't pull a pile off a catalogue. Helix configuration, shaft size and depth are specified against the actual soil report and the actual loads, and the design is confirmed in the field rather than on paper — installation torque tells us what the ground is really doing as each pile advances. Where conditions change partway across a site, depth adjusts automatically to suit.
